Latest information (why a small business needs a Web site)

One of the major benefits of a Web site is that it can always have the most up to date information. Make sure it does though or it can reduce peoples trust in you.

Taking another look at 13 Reasons you should embrace the Web, this week I’ll talk about proving the latest information.

The problem with printed materials

One of the problems with printed marketing materials is that they are usually out of date before you’ve used them all. When you get some stuff printed it’s nearly always only a little bit more expensive to buy 1000 than 500, so you buy 1000. After you’ve used about 400 some detail changes, maybe you offer an extra service or your prices have changed. You’ve now got 600 that are out of date, so you either have to explain that to people or write the updated information on (neither of which is highly professional).

The benefit of a Web site

On the other hand, when something changes you can update your Web site straight away.

Updating your Web site regularly can also increase your rating in search engines as they check when pages were last updated. More importantly, if you provide up to date useful information then people will link to your Web site and that is the best way to increase your search rating.

The danger of not updating your Web site

The flip side of being able to make sure your Web site is up to date, is that people expect it to have the latest information.

The biggest problem is when someone sends out printed material promising more information on the Web site, but nobody gives the information to whoever updates the site. If you are going to promise something is on your Web site make sure it’s there before you send out the promise.

The other problem is not having the latest information on your Web site. All to often I’ve gone to a Web site only to find the information is out of date. If your Web site is out of date then people can start to lose trust in you, and wonder if you are still in business.

With the power of being able to have the latest information comes the responsibility to make sure you do.
